3 Things That Happen When You Stop Smoking Weed


Those of us who like to consume marijuana on a regular basis have likely heard of folks who take “tolerance breaks” from time to time because they’re not receiving the same psychoactive effectsthat they once were.

“T-Breaks” are essentially periods of time where you abstain from consuming marijuana, so that when you do consume marijuana again, you receive that heady psychoactive effect that you’re looking for.

But, an increased psychoactive high isn’t the only thing you gain when you quit marijuana for a short time. You will also notice differences in your sleep, your memory, and your appetite.

Here are three other great benefits of taking a break from marijuana that you might not be aware of:

Your dreams come back in full force
Sleeping is something that is highly influenced by one’s marijuana consumption habits. But, it makes sense, because a large number of people use the substance as a sleep aid–if you’ve ever smoked a heavy strain of indica, you know that it’s bedtime for Bonzo.

A 2008 study published in Sleep Medicine Reviews found that most people will likely struggle to fall asleep once they stop smoking weed (as is expected with most sleep aids).

However, marijuana has also been found to inhibit REM sleep (the section of our sleep cycles tied to dreaming). You might notice that you sometimes don’t dream at all or have trouble recollecting your dreams when you smoke weed. When you stop smoking weed, your dreams come back tenfold.

“If you’ve been taking a drug that suppresses a certain phenomenon for a while, then that phenomenon will come back stronger when you stop using that drug,” says Dr. Hans Hamburger, neurologist and head of Holland Sleep Research.

You can bring back healthy memory function
Smoking cannabis is known to affect our memory function. It might not have long-lasting effects on short-term memory, but heavy users have scored quite low on verbal memory tests when compared to non-users.

A study published in Archives of General Psychiatry discovered that these effects can be reversed. Heavy users need only to abstain from consuming marijuana for at least 28 days to restore their memory function back to normal levels.

Your appetite isn’t reliant on marijuana
People who smoke weed fairly often will tell you that they sometimes struggle to eat if they’re not high. Marijuana is well-known for its appetite-increasing effects, as everyone always jokes about how it gives you the munchies.

When you stop smoking weed, you will likely experience a lack of appetite. But, if you can keep it up for at least four days, your appetite will begin to return to its normal functionality, with a full appetite being restored after 28 days.

If you’re wanting to take a break from marijuana, do it! Moderation and balance is the name of the game. You’ll get to experience all these effects when you do and you’ll also have a bit of extra cash in your pocket from not having to buy weed. Not to mention, when you smoke again, it’s going to be oh so good.
